About creating purpose based on the systems view

The basic prerequisite for unfolding and activating purpose is to identify the essence of the company’s existence within its dynamic context. Starting from the inside out, the board or a leadership team needs to ask: “WHY do we do WHAT we do?” This deserves capable leaders – and courage. Once the process is set in motion, the individuals involved almost automatically develop an in-depth understanding of their organisation from various perspectives. They will gain new insights – positive ones and usually some unpleasant truths as well. Furthermore, purpose definitely needs a framework for its activation. Only then is purpose able to guide decision-making and create meaning. Activated at all levels in the organisation, purpose can become a driver of lasting positive change.

The overall goal that needs to be achieved. It informs and guides the planning, selection and implementation of strategies, actions and tools. Here we connect the present with the future.

Strategic Level

The strategic guidelines for choosing concrete actions and tools as part of an overall strategic plan to accomplish the goal (success).

Actions Level

Concrete actions and initiatives that follow overall strategic guidelines for achieving success within the system. Intelligent prioritisation adds to speed, direction and return.

Tools Level

The tools, methods and other forms of support for achieving the overall goal (success). They should be selected wisely, each one designed with a specific purpose in mind.
